just a question, on the welcome block and the custom center block, how large of a pic can I put in those blocks before it breaks the layout?

Nobody can tell you a general size. It depends on your style, the screen resolution of the user, your width of the side columns, etc.
You have to try it yourself.

if you have images that bloating your style you can use the AIR BOX IMAGE RESIZER MOD. Here a link: http://www.provisum-illumina.com/en/inf ... phpbb.html

There are several of those mods outside that resizes images for your need. I use the mentioned above and it works perfect - and you can configure it as well by editing a file...
