Is it possible or doable to rename the portal.php file to something else? eg, home.php?
I'd like to but as of yet haven't found a working way to do so.

It is possible, but quite a pain to do it.
Search in all files included in the package, also the edits you've done to the core system, and replace "portal" to the desired name.
