Hey Board3 team and modders!

I've got a request for a new module, I've done the design work on how I think it should work but I'll probably need some pointers on how to implement it.

Essentially I want to add a carousel that displays thread title, plus the first paragraph of a news post over top of an image for the first 5 threads in the news forum. Take a look at the mockup I've made below for reference:


Top down:

• Thread title, if to long to fit, adds a "..." to the end.
• First paragraph of news post (basically all the text in the thread until the first line break).
• Navigation bar at the bottom, showing the current news article being displayed. You can click on these to manually navigate between latest news.

I'd like the image in the background to be pulled from the news thread if possible. Essentially, if there's an embedded image in the thread I'd like to have that image resized and displayed as the background image if it's a suitable size. If no image is included or an image isn't of a suitable size I'd like to be able to define a directory of pre-made images that the module will use. For example, there will be a pre-made image for news 1, news 2, news 3, news 4, and news 5.

It would be great if the colors of this module could be easily customizable too. For example, the active/inactive colors of the navbar, the title and content text colors, and the title and content background block colors.

I believe this is a pretty intense modification / addition, but I think that something like this could benefit a lot of people. In fact, the latest thread on this forum is a similar request:

very nice idea and i think the hardest part would be pulling the image from the topic to display it in the portal. other than that i really hope someone will work on something like this.

Yeah I figured that part would be difficult, if someone decides to pick this up though I think an initial version with a simple predefined 1-5 images that is uses would be awesome too. If it could be done in such a way that specific usergroups are allowed to edit the 1-5 images, I think this is all that you really need. It would allow anyone with permission to post news update the images to something specific if needed.

I like the idea and I'll see what I can do. I've changed the target version of the feature request to 2.1.0-b1 as it definitely won't make it into the phpBB 3.0 version.

ok so i've started a smaller project of this which would be using set option via the ACP if someone is after a static carousel like the other one requested. i'm using the java code they linked to for the styling and have it running on my demo site currently so next thing to do is to setup the ACP for it

Wow, this looks great! Any possibility to implement this in the next board3-update? Would be awesome!
