missing lang file?

Your phpBB Type: Standard phpBB3
MODs installed: Yes
Your knowledge: Advanced Knowledge

What have you done before the problem was there?
made file edits
What have you already tryed to solve the problem?
backed up includes/functions.php and replacing the bu file reinstates the site, however making the minor 2 edits to this file causes my board to crash and i cant figure out why, maybe i'm missen something... please help me find the error.
