Force "Latest News" to refresh?

We have mchat set up as a Portal block. This makes the the portal page the "hang out" for most members. It would be very nice if the latest news(latest posts) would auto-refresh at a set interval just like mchat.Is there an easy way to do this?

There is currently no plan on this and just refreshing one block is rather impossible without using some ajax. This would require major changes to the block and/or portal code.
