Go to your ACP -> portal -> news and disable "Display the number of replies and views"

Now it should look better

And yes, you can delete the whole left/right blocks in portal_body.html but you wont have a menu and such... In my eyes this makes no sense...

It is important to know which Style you use.
You can NOT change the size of the Portal, without to have an expanded Board too.
