You haven't refreshed the theme, ACP -> Styles -> Themes -> prosilver -> refresh.
For subsilver2 look in the contrib folder for the install file.

You've saved the language file you've edited as the wrong type. You need to save it as UTF8 without BOM, your editor has saved it just as UTF8. A text editor that can differentiate is Notepad++

You're saving the file incorrectly, the error is being reported as you have a Byte Order Mark in your language file. Use a text editor such as Notepad++ that can differentiate between these sorts of text files.

Well you haven't updated the style I said above as the source still displays the old code.. did you apply it to styles/Black Pearl/template/portal/block/news_compact.html ?

The only think I can think of is run the uninstaller, then go through every edit again, then re-install.

This portal was never designed to handle pages like that, but some one else may have a better explanation.
