Personally I suggest installing 2.0 beta and playing around with it on your home machine.
I can't answer all your questions, but a few comments:
"wait untiil it's gone alpha". It's past alpha, it's at beta.

Hi all.
I know, first post and all.
I put in a debug_print_backtrace() into utf8_strpos where they print the failure message and found that utf8_strpos is being called with an empty last argument (or well, it's "false" so it doesn't print as anything).
