Replacing the birthday block php file with the one from the v1.0.4 package does the trick even if you don't want do an upgrade to v1.0.4;
<site>/portal/block/birthday_list.php
I tested this earlier as I have the same issue.
On the other hand I don't know why you wouldn't upgrade for the bug-fixes ...

Awesome - got it working, thank you.
It needs multiple menu levels though (as someone pointed out above) to give direct access to sub-forums via the popup menu.
Otherwise I'm going to have to re-arrange my forum hierachy into a flat list which isn't so good.
